Ceramides

The barrier ingredient that matters most when skin stops behaving.

Ceramides are lipids that make up a large share of the skin barrier. They sit between skin cells and hold water in, which is why depleted ceramides show up as dryness, tightness and sudden sensitivity.

For anyone whose skin has become drier and more reactive during weight loss, this is the ingredient category to prioritise before anything else.

What they do

  • Reduce water loss through the skin surface
  • Restore comfort in tight, flaking or stinging skin
  • Improve tolerance of actives you previously couldn't use
  • Smooth texture by rehydrating the surface

How to choose a product

Ceramides work best alongside cholesterol and fatty acids, mirroring the barrier's natural composition. Formulations that list all three are generally a better bet than a single ceramide high on the label.

Cream and balm textures deliver them better than thin gels.

How to use them

  • Twice daily, over a humectant layer, on damp skin
  • Include the neck and chest
  • During a barrier flare, use them alone for two weeks before reintroducing actives
  • Reapply on the body after every shower

Realistic expectations

Ceramides repair and maintain; they don't remodel. Expect comfort, hydration and better texture within days to weeks — not firming or lifting.
